BIBLE  HILL – Another request for a crosswalk at the Vimy and College road intersection in Bible Hill has been denied again.

Village of Bible Hill commissioners discussed the topic this week during a committee meeting. Correspondence from the Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Department to the village indicates the department “has not approved the request for a crosswalk” at that site because the “west bound approach to this site does not have the required stopping sight distance.”

Measurements from TiRD indicate the distance for appropriate sight of the area needed to safely stop is 69m compared to 87 that would require a crosswalk.

“The transportation department has based (its decision) on the recorded speed measured and (motorists) go faster than the speed limit,” said village clerk Bob Christianson. “Because they go faster, they need more stop sight distance.”

Commissioner Sharon McLean was surprised with the information presented.

“I’ve been sitting here for 10 years and I’ve never heard of that (reason) before,” McLean said.

Village commissioners recently had PDI Engineering Group, of Truro, look at that section and it believed a crosswalk was appropriate for the site.

“PDI based it on posted speed,” said Christianson.

The clerk suggested two possible solutions to the ongoing issue. One would be to extend the sidewalk on the north, west to the existing crossing at the Dal AC library. The problems associated with this, said Christianson, are the lack of exiting right-of-way and a very steep hill at the existing crosswalk.

Another potential solution would be to extend the sidewalk on the south, east of the existing sidewalk and place the crossing at the crest of the hill, near the water tower. That option would involve building a section of a proposed multi-use trail on College Road, which is already in the design stage.

Christianson said it’s time to resolve the issue.

“It’s a hazard … it’s a long, outstanding problem.”

He will meet again with transportation officials and present more information during the village commission’s meeting next Tuesday night.

I don't understand the need for this crosswalk! I travel College Road several times a week, sometimes several times a day, there is never anyone crossing at this intersection! Once or twice I've seen someone scoot across the road to the parking lot but never at the crosswalk! Take a look at the traffic on Pictou! A change is needed at the Vimy and Pictou road cross section! Take a better look at what needs to be done, and not what you think needs doing!
