TRURO - Education classes on high blood pressure are beginning next week as part of a pilot project being offered by the Colchester East Hants Health Authority (CEHHA).

The classes are being supported through a $3,000 grant from the Diabetes Care Program of Nova Scotia, Cardiovascular Heath Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Renal Program.

"We were pleased to learn that we were successful in receiving one of these grants and are eager to begin the classes to increase awareness and evaluate how we can better support the prevention, diagnosis and management of hypertension," said Meaghan O'Handley, CEHHA stroke program coordinator.

The three organizations have teamed up to support programs and partnerships such as this in an effort to address and reduce common risk factors associated with chronic disease.

In Nova Scotia, about three in every 10 adults have a condition known as hypertension (high blood pressure). High blood pressure can lead to a narrowing of the arteries, which can increase the risk of a heart attack, stroke or kidney disease.

Since there are often no symptoms, many people with hypertension are not even aware that they have it and for that reason the condition has come to be known as the silent killer.

Individuals with high blood pressure or who have a family member with high blood pressure and anyone interested in learning more, are welcome to attend one of the group classes being offered over the next few months. The classes will be held on a weekday evening at the Colchester East Hants Health Centre and will run about one and a half to two hours.

The classes will cover such important information as:

- What blood pressure is.

- The normal range for your blood pressure.

- The causes and effects of high blood pressure.

- How to lower your blood pressure.

- Other healthy lifestyle advice.
