Friday is the final day for families to apply for gifts

Jean Miller and the rest of her Christmas for Kids crew have a lot of toys to choose from when they make up angel gifts for kids. They’ve already made many of the gift bags, but the big push starts next week. Parents will be called to pick up gifts from Monday through Friday.

AMHERST – Staff at Christmas for Kids are hitting the final stretch.

“We’ll start calling on Monday for families to come and pick their gifts up,” said Jean Miller, Christmas for kids organizer. “We’ll be dispensing those all next week.”

Today is the last day families can sign up to be recipients of gifts from Christmas for Kids.

“So far, 262 families have signed up to Christmas for kids, making up about 550 kids,” said Miller. “We had 550 last year so we might be up a little bit.”

There are angel locations throughout Cumberland County where people can still drop off gifts, including the Christmas for Kids centre in the Amherst Centre Mall, the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, the Amherst Dairy Queen on Robert Angus Drive, Archway Insurance on Victoria Street in Amherst, Scotiabank branches in Oxford and Pugwash, the Pugwash Co-op, the Amherst Pharamsave and the Amherst Credit Union.

“We have a lot of angel trees out there and they have to be back here by Monday at the latest,” said Miller.

Once all the gifts arrive at the Amherst Centre Mall location, the task of sorting the gifts will begin for the small staff at Christmas for Kids.

“We can’t have too many people making up the gift bags because it gets too crowded and things tend to get mixed up,” said Miller

The gifts are sorted to make sure they’re age appropriate.

“The teen girls want make-up and jewelry, and young boys want the Power Rangers and the remote control cars,” said Miller.

Other popular items are Mega Blocks and Lego, games and stuffed animals, “and dolls are always a favourite,” said Miller.

Families requesting a gift angel can call 667-1949 today between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

This is the 20th year Christmas for Kids has served Cumberland County, and more than 10,000 kids have benefited from the campaign since it’s implementation.
