Dartmouth, Shediac and Cumberland earn opening night wins

Longtime minor hockey volunteer Roy Maltby was honoured during the opening of the Bluenose hockey tournament on Friday.

AMHERST – The opening of the Carter's Sports Cresting Bluenose Minor Hockey had added meaning on Friday night.

The opening ceremonies for the tournament were dedicated to the memory of longtime volunteer Roy Maltby, who passed away recent.

Maltby's wife, Evelyn; son, Stephen, and brother, Walter, were on hand for the opening as the Cumberland County Minor Hockey Association unveiled stickers that players will wear on their helmets in his memory.

A longtime volunteer with the Amherst and Cumberland County minor hockey associations, Maltby was also instrumental in the creation of the Fundy Hockey School 30 years ago and was also active with the Junior Ramblers, the Metro Valley Junior Hockey League and the Maritime Junior Hockey League.

The tournament continues through the weekend at the Amherst Stadium and Richard Calder Arena in Springhill with play in the Atom A, Atom AA and Peewee AA divisions.

In games Friday night, Dartmouth defeated the Amherst Toyota Ramblers 8-1 in Atom A action, Lewisville defeated Dieppe 7-4, Shediac defeated the Amherst Fire Department Atom AA Ramblers 7-1, Bedford defeated West Hants 3-1 in Atom AA action and the Cumberland County Eastlink Ramblers defeated Strait-Richmond 5-1 in Peewee AA play.
