Federal government matching donations until Dec. 9

SPRINGHILL – In response to the devastating conditions in the Philippines, students at Nova Scotia Community College’s Cumberland Campus have a message for the public: give what you can now and give it to the Red Cross.

Camaraderie between Nova Scotia Community College’s carpentry and Continuing Care Assistant programs at its Cumberland Campus in Springhill was the foundation for a barbecue fundraiser on Thursday to raise money for the Red Cross’ relief efforts in the Philippines.

“Until December 9th, every dollar raised through the Canadian Red Cross the federal government matches,” Continuing Care Assistant [CCA] faculty Rhonda Jackson said Thursday.

More than 600,000 have been displaced in the Philippines and as many as 10,000 could be dead following last Friday’s typhoon that struck the nation made up of an archipelago of 7,107 islands. Contact with the islands hit the hardest by the typhoon has been limited and getting aid to the country has become an international priority.

With the level of destruction that has taken place, Jackson says it’s very important to get the displaced access to shelter and clean water before thinking about supplies for rebuilding efforts.

“Right now they need shelter and water,” Jackson said. “It won’t do as much good now donating supplies than donating money will, because the emergency is for shelter and clean water.”

As many as 11 million people are thought affected by the typhoon and to show their support the campus’ CCA program and carpentry program teamed up to host a barbecue at the school to raise money towards the relief efforts, with all proceeds going to the Canadian Red Cross. The Town of Springhill’s Dept. of Leisure Services loaned the campus its barbecue for the fundraiser, where the message for future patrons.

“If anyone want to donate, go to the local Red Cross and go soon,” Jackson said.

The Canadian red Cross holds an office in Amherst at 16 Church Street. For more information visit www.redcross.ca or call 902-667-8794.
