AMHERST - As long as there are humans there will be Romeo and Juliet.

The Tantramar Theatre Young Company is staging the timeless, universal play of loyalty to love over loyalty to family.

"These young people have been rehearsing for two months and we're taking the show to three elementary schools and E.B. Chandler on Monday and Tuesday," said Bette Douglas, director of Romeo and Juliet. "They rehearse twice a week, Monday and Thursdays for an hour-and-a-half each time, and they speak the Shakespearian language very well."

The idea for the play was suggested to Douglas by her great-granddaughter, Madelynn Carter, who has participated in Tantramar Theatre productions since she was a baby, and plays Juliet in the play.

"She came to me this summer and suggested we do this play, so I had no hesitation in saying yes," said Douglas.

Isabelle Ettinger is the youngest actor in the play and says the language is kind of hard but everybody is getting the hang of it.

"They are all very bright young people, said Douglas. "They had no difficulty in learning the rhythm in the Shakespeare speech."

Douglas is very impressed with all the actors and actresses.

"These young people are all serious actors and they are all very busy young people," said Douglas. "And I'm love watching the rehearsals. I'm excited for the family and friends and the students in these schools to have an introduction to Shakespeare."

The 40-minute play starts at Spring Street Academy Monday at 9 a.m., then at Cumberland North Academy at 1 p.m.

On Tuesday they are at West Highlands Elementary at 9 a.m. and at E.B. Chandler at 1 p.m.

Tuesday night they're at they we're at the Wandlyn Inn Scotia Room at 7 p.m. Donations will be accepted at the door during the Wandlyn Inn staging.

"I invite friends and family to see this exceptional group of young people," said Douglas.
