UPDATE 4 P.M.

TRURO HEIGHTS – The RCMP have confirmed a woman murdered in Truro Heights earlier this week was strangled.

The RCMP surrounded a fourplex on Mitchell Drive in Truro Heights on Wednesday after a 47-year-old woman’s body was found. File photo

Cheryl Mildred Thompson, 47, was found dead in an apartment at 5 Mitchell Dr. in Truro Heights at about 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday. RCMP and the Northeast Nova Major Crimes Unit reported the cause of Thompson’s death yesterday.

A man believed to have been in the apartment at the time of the woman’s death barricaded himself in a vehicle on a private road in the Portapique area for hours following the find. Gerald Martin Thompson, 49, died shortly after supper as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot. The RCMP confirm no additional suspects are being sought in relation to Cheryl Thompson's death but the investigation is continuing.

RCMP officers were at both scenes on Thursday.

The matter has been referred to the province’s Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) for investigation into the man’s death. SIRT has reported Gerald Thompson had two firearms in his possession.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia, whether or not there is an allegation of wrongdoing. Investigations are under the direction and control of independent civilian director Ron MacDonald.

The Thompsons, who were married and lived at the apartment for about 15 years, had a daughter and a grandchild.

The Central Nova Women’s Resource Centre on Prince Street in Truro is collecting financial contributions in support of the daughter.

Contributions can be made at the centre at 676 Prince St. For more information, contact the centre at 895-4295 or email cnwrc@eastlink.ca.
