BIBLE HILL – The request for a crosswalk along a main road in Bible Hill has been rejected.

Crosswalk suggestion along Pictou Road denied

The Village of Bible Hill recently asked the Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Department

to look into the possibility of constructing a crosswalk and overhead crosswalk sign at the intersection of Allison and Bigney avenues, which run along Pictou Road.

Village officials told the Truro Daily News on Wednesday that the request has been denied after a study by the transportation department because the crosswalk isn’t warranted due to a number of factors including line of sight and volume of use issues.

Information from the village indicates part of the transportation department’s study saw 32

pedestrians in the area during a short study period but “only one crossed” the road at that juncture, according to Angie Odgen, the village’s finance officer.

Village chairman Tom Burke said the decision is not unexpected, but understood.

“I’m certainly not surprised … they did their homework and we respect their decision. It just wasn’t worth it,” said Burke. “We’re just going to move on because we know they are not going to approve it.”

Had the project gone forward, it was estimated to cost between $30,000 and $40,000.

I'm still ridiculously fed up with the fact that across the road from Village Court is THREE bus stops and the closest crosswalk is five minutes up or down the road. Additionally, there is a trail that leads students attending Bible Hill Junior and Redcliff Middle on the opposing side of the road that there is no cross walk to it. It appears as if motor vehicle operators are blind to the fact there are students (WITH BACKPACKS!) trying to cross the road at 8am in the morning and 3pm in the afternoon. Something needs to be done about this. We are wasting our money on things such as a round-about that nobody understands when instead we should be putting in crosswalks to make it safer for children to get to school.
