TRURO – Two new features at the Colchester SPCA will be officially opened this weekend.
Melissa Ross, manager of animal care at the Industrial Avenue facility, confirms a grand opening will be held on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. to celebrate the building of two outdoor dog runs that were a project taken on mostly by volunteers and businesses.
The outdoor play and run areas for dogs – one for small dogs (26x20 feet) and the other for large and multiple dogs (20x60 feet) – took about two months to finish and included gravelling the “whole side of the building” and erecting fences to encase the area, said Ross.
“It’s to give the dogs more space to play and run and it’s good for potential adopters who can watch them and play with the dogs off-leash,” said Ross, adding at least half a dozen businesses and numerous volunteers contributed time, finances and materials to complete the project. Ross said there were “minimal” costs to the shelter and the celebration on Saturday is also in part to thank everyone who made the dog runs possible.
A ribbon cutting will also take place during the Saturday gathering, which will occur rain or shine. Donations will be accepted and people looking to adopt a dog will be encouraged to ask questions and spend time with the animals. There are five dogs at the shelter looking for a home and there’s a waiting list of two or three dogs waiting to come into the shelter for placement.
