GLACE BAY — The Halifax Regional School Board held a nationwide search for a new superintendent and came up with a native Cape Bretoner.

Elwin LeRoux

Glace Bay native Elwin LeRoux began his new job Thursday, taking over from interim superintendent Judy White, who filled the position after Carole Olsen resigned in August 2012.

"Its a very exciting opportunity and it's the beginning," said LeRoux.

The Halifax Regional School Board was formed in 1996 with the amalgamation of boards in Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford and Halifax County. The Halifax board is the largest in Atlantic Canada, serving about 49,000 students in 139 schools.

LeRoux has worked for the Halifax board for 24 years, most recently as a senior staff adviser and previously as co-ordinator of school administration, a supervisor, principal, vice-principal and teacher.

LeRoux said he's excited about the opportuntites ahead. One of the board's latest accomplishments is the development of a strageic plan.

"The mission in there is providing a high quality education for every student every day," he added. "I'm very much looking forward to working with our staff and our communities and our students to make sure that happens."

LeRoux graduated from Glace Bay's St. Mike's High School in 1984. He graduated from St. Francis Xavier University with a degree in science and earned a bachelor of education from Saint Mary’s University as well as two masters' degrees in education from the Halifax school.

LeRoux is married to Monique (Martell), also a Glace Bay native, and they have four children. He said his family gets back to Cape Breton at least once a year to see his parents Elwin and Carmie LeRoux and his wife's parents Joan and Adrian Martell.

"It's important to take our children to see their grandparents," he said. "Our families come to Halifax as well, we were just in the Valley picking apples last weekend, a family tradiation."

Gin Yee, chair of the Halifax board, described LeRoux as "the best candidate, period."

“Elwin is very interested in how students learn and he is enthusiastic about how we can use technology to engage and educate them."

Congratulations Elwin. I haven't seen you since we graduated high school together but can say with all honesty I am not surprised to hear of your success. Well done. Best of luck in your new position.

Congratulations to Elwin. He is a credit to his family, his home town and to his adopted city. To all who know him this will be seen as a wise decision by the Halifax School Board.

Congratulations to Mr. LeRoux-I wish him the best. I guess his first task will be to build a male washroom in the board offices
