Integrating music with supportive care of the dying has become an integral part of palliative care at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney. In support of this program, the Cape Breton Chorale joined the worldwide "Voices for Hospice and Palliative Care Movement" and held concerts with other choirs in support of the music therapy program. The initial concert in 2005 has been followed by fundraising concerts  in 2007, 2009 and 2011.

Currently, the Cape Breton Palliative Care Society funds a part-time music therapist.

The Canadian Association for Music Therapy describes it as "the skillful use of music and musical elements to promote, maintain and restore mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health."

Specifically, music therapy helps to alleviate fears and aniexieties, reinforces identity, decreases the feeling of isolation, fosters communication, promotes emotional expression, decreases the perception of pain and aids in the life renewal process.

Each patient's need for the program is unique and customized to support them.
