Clara Bacon died Sunday following lengthy illness
Clara Bacon, the matriarch of one of Cumberland County's most politically active families, passed away Sunday at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre.

AMHERST – The wife of former Nova Scotia Premier Roger Bacon has died.
Clara Bacon, 89, passed away Sunday at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre.
A native of Waweig, N.B., Bacon worked for the Inspection Board of the United Kingdom and Canada as a shell inspector at Robb Engineering during the Second World War.
She was a past member of the Amherst Curling Club, a member of the Amherst Golf Club, honorary life member of the Progressive Conservative Women’s Association of Cumberland East and past honorary president of the Women’s Institutes of Nova Scotia and a member of the Nappan United Church.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Roger. She fully supported her husband’s political career, attending hundreds of political events, agricultural exhibitions, fairs and farming events.
In her younger years, she raised turkeys and worked in the blueberry fields to earn money to purchase furniture for the home. She was also a talented sewer, sewing all her children’s clothes and making many quilts for her family.
Bacon’s funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Furlong-Jones Funeral Home. Visiting hours are Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
