Cumberland Health Care Foundation managing director Gwen Kerr and Nini MacDonald volunteered their time Saturday night at the Amherst Fire Hall in Support of the Garage Guys' Bigger and Better Auction and Dance that ran from 3:00 pm until midnight in support of the Cumberland Cancer Assistance Fund that has disbursed approximately $111,000.00 since 2009.

AMHERST-Hundreds of people from all walks of life supported the Garage Guys’ Bigger & Better Auction this past Saturday at the Amherst Fire Department.

“It’s been wonderful,” stated Cumberland Health Care Foundation managing director Gwen Kerr. “So many people supported this event. We’ve had different groups of people coming and going all day,” she added. “Some people came to donate items to the silent auction; some people came for the different groups of performers who donated their time; and now some people are here to bid items for the silent auction,” added Kerr. Over $70,000.00 worth of items were up for bid.

“It’s been awesome,” exclaimed Garage Guy and organizer Jim Baker. “There’s been a great turnout, with lots of people donating stuff back that they’ve won. It’s unreal,” said Baker. “We used to be involved with the Relay 4 Life; this is our first time working with the Cumberland Health Care Foundation’s Cancer Assistance Fund,” he added. “We got involved with this (Cumberland Cancer Assistance Fund) because 100% of all the money stays within Cumberland County. We were expecting to raise anywhere between $50,000.00 and $100,000.00; we should between $70,000.00 and $80,000.00” Truro’s Tim Parker served as auctioneer.

Piggly Wiggly served up a pulled pork sandwich and Old Dutch Chips while Tim Hortons donated Timbits and coffee which were free for the eating and drinking.

Performers included Free Fall, Pick & Grin, The Elastic Band and Steve Butler.

Prizes included a two-car garage package valued at more than $35,000; $5,000 toward the purchase or lease of a new vehicle from Amherst Chrysler or Atlantic Kia; a Via Rail travel voucher valued at $1,700; a paved driveway valued at $3,000.00; a diamond ring from J.G. Jewellers valued at over $1,600.00; a team-signed Phoenix Coyotes jersey, Home Hardware gift cards and much, much more.

“We’d like to thank all the people who showed up and donated their time,” stated Baker. “Thank you to all the performers who made this event the success that it was,” he added. “Amherst is a giving town,” he added. “Everyone’s been affected in one way or another through cancer. That’s why so many are involved in this.”
