GLACE BAY — A small area of Main Street closed since Monday to allow for drilling in a  section where subsidence was located in March wrapped up Tuesday afternoon.

The road was reopened by 3 p.m.

John Phalen, the Cape Breton Regional Municipality's manager for  public works in east division, said the core samples collected will now be sent to a lab to be analyzed.

“All indications of the strata that we got from the cores all the way down, is showing that everything is looking like it’s mostly consolidated,” he said.

“We are going to send the cores back to the lab and everything will be analyzed, but the initial analysis looks good. We hired EXP Services for this."

A dip in the road was located in front of St. Anne's Parish Centre in mid-March. An independent geologist was contacted and provided a map of the old mine workings under the road. It was determined the old Sterling Mine is beneath the road. The road has been monitored since then by the CBRM.

The drilling by S&D Drilling began on the street Monday and continued Tuesday, resulting in a small section of the street being closed and traffic rerouted.

Phalen said the drilling was to ensure the subsidence had stopped. He said the workers drilled to about 150-155 ft. Tuesday, past a coal seam.

"All of the strata we got from the cores going all the  way down is showing everything is looking like it is mostly consolidated," he said.

"Visually it looks good but the stuff still has to go back to the lab to be checked out."

Phalen said as the drill cuts, what it cuts stays inside a five foot long steel core.

"They drill five feet then they pull that steel up and just tap it and out comes the ground from the depth they are at and a core sample of the actual strata at that depth."

"You can actually put your hand on the coal that is  down 145 ft. there."

Phalen said if this investigation confirms the subsidence has settled, the road will be repaired this fall.
