NORTH SYDNEY — One of North Sydney's biggest gathering spots for recreation and entertainment has a new manager.

Sydney Mines native Cory Keeping sits in his new manager's office at the Emera Centre Northside.

Sydney Mines native Cory Keeping, 41, began his new job at the Emera Centre Northside in early August.

Keeping is a former contract manager with Bell Aliant. He most recently worked as manager of a fuel distribution team for Chinook Fuels in Fort McMurray, Alta.

Keeping, who has been involved in the Cape Breton performance industry for about 20 years, said the Emera Centre is a perfect fit for him as it combines his love of music and hockey.

"I played hockey my whole life, playing with Memorial Marauders and some Junior B hockey in Glace Bay and I'm in the entertainment field," said Keeping. "I've been playing music my whole life with groups like Bruce Guthro and Reckless band and currently playing with Andrew Doyle Band."

Built in 2011, the state-of-the-art Emera Centre houses an NHL-quality ice surface, an indoor covered walking track, meeting and banquet rooms.

"I would like to see Emera Centre become an entertainment hub for the Northside and that would (include) concerts and hockey events," said Keeping. "There's all kinds of groups and bands out there that are still touring that this would be a perfect size venue for."

Keeping said the main floor of the Emera Centre can seat up to 1,000. However, events such as the facility's annual Halloween bash, taking place Oct. 26, are held upstairs the Credit Union room.

He said right now he's especially interested in developing a Christmas concert at the facility.

"I'm just new, getting my feet wet right now," said Keeping. "So it's going to fun, I'm really going to enjoy it."

Upcoming events at the centre include the 20-team Toyko Lloyd gentlemen's hockey tournament starting on Sept. 21. The centre is also one of several rinks that will host the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in December.

Regular programs that are part of the Emera Centre events include a seniors walking group and Zumba fitness classes.
