CHARLOTTETOWN — A Prince Edward Island legislative committee will travel across the province this week to hear about prescription drug abuse.

The P.E.I. legislature’s Standing Committee on Health, Social Development and Seniors will host public meetings in three communities: Charlottetown, Summerside and Montague.

The legislature passed a motion last spring asking the committee to tackle the issue of prescription drug abuse, which has been a growing concern in recent years.

The information gathered from the sessions will be reviewed and a report with recommendations will be brought back to the legislative assembly.

we have a big problem with prescription drug abuse in cape Breton because people are short on money or trying to supplement their income by selling their prescribed drugs for 5 to 10 a pill and local dealers are right into buying them to sell for 15 to 30 or they pay people in pills who do work for them and in newfoundland people are robbing pharmacies to get the pills because there is a great profit to be had
