SYDNEY — Organizers of the Cape Breton Fiddlers Run have modified the run's marathon and half marathon routes this year because of construction scheduled to take place on the New Waterford Highway.

Cape Breton Fiddlers Run half marathon winner Chris Milburn of Sydney, left, raises his hand with full marathon winner Paddy McCluskey of Victoria, B.C., as they cross the finish line together at Victoria Park last year. Milburn and McCluskey, both doctors, have been friends since high school.

The new route takes runners from the Victoria Park Armouries, through Open Hearth Park, to the Heritage Trail, then to South Bar School and back. Marathoners will run the route twice.

Runners in the 5 km, 10 km and half marathon relay will also start and finish at the Victoria Park Armouries and go through the new trails in the Open Hearth Park.

"Since the marathoners will run the route twice, this means that there will be more action along the way. It will be more exciting for them and for the spectators," said David Gabriel, the race director.

"It will also enhance the Ceilidh on the course celebration.”

The Cape Breton Fiddlers Run takes place Oct. 20 at Victoria Park in Sydney.

New route maps will be posted on the Fiddlers Run website in the near future.

Runners are encouraged to register early so that shirt and medal orders are completed in time.

Online registration is available until midnight Oct. 18.

Runners can also register in person on Oct. 19 at the Victoria Park Armouries from 1-6 p.m.
