BADDECK — Victoria County is gathering October events and activities under one umbrella to form its annual Fall Harvest Activefest.
This year the collection of events will run from Oct. 5-31 with common themes that include physical activity and healthy eating.
“We are slowing getting applications in and will include present programming and new programming,” said Vince Forrestall, the physical activity strategy co-ordinator for Victoria County.
“We are still looking for community groups, leaders, organizations to come forward to provide a physical activity — hiking or even a try-it session.”
Those who wish to partner with the county in the activefest initiative will benefit from a contribution through Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation funding and extra promotion for their event from Victoria County.
“Initiatives, if they focus on physical activity, healthy eating, try-it sessions, leadership development, we would contribute up to $200. It doesn’t sound like a lot, but it helps.”
If a group is offering Zumba, for example, he said a Victoria County partnership could result in a free opening night that would allow more people to give that activity a try.
Longstanding and new events are all welcome to sign on, he added.
“I know traditionally there have been salmon dinners and other dinners. We’d like to have that all included under our umbrella.”
Organizers and community leaders in charge of walking groups, yoga sessions and potluck suppers are also encouraged to sign up for the initiative.
Forrestall said it will also be a good opportunity to promote green gyms found outdoors at places across the county such as Rankin School, the Ingonish outdoor arena, Neils Harbour and at the St. Anns Bay United Church Hall.
This type of initiative was tried with success last year, he said.
“It is something that has started and we are just building up on it as a special event under our Naturally Active umbrella.”
Leaders, organizers, service providers and facility operators wishing to sign on can contact Forrestall at 295-0387 or by email at email@example.com.
