Driver charged with refusing breathalyzer

Amherst Police responded to 28 complaints over the weekend.

AMHERST – An Amherst man is facing charges of assault and uttering threats following an incident at Liberty Lane residence on Sunday.

The female victim managed to escape with only minor injuries.

The man will appear in court on Sept. 16.

On Friday, officers went to a LaPlanche Street business after complaints were received of several youths climbing on the roof.

Two 16-year-old males were located and they admitted to playing in the area.

Both were cautioned and released.

Two men were arrested for public intoxication near Victoria Square. The males, arrested at separate times, were held in cells until they were sober.

Each male received a summary offence ticket for public intoxication upon their release.

Police went to a Prince Arthur Street restaurant after complaints were received that a male attempted to walk behind the front counter. The male was located and ordered to remain off the property for the night.

Officers also received a call of two males involved in a fight in a downtown area bar. Both males left the area prior to police arrival.

On Saturday, police observed a vehicle squealing its tires near the police department. They later observed and stopped the same vehicle on LaPlanche Street.

The officer conducting the stop could smell alcohol on the breath of the driver and he was asked to blow into a roadside screening device.

The result was a fail and the man was arrested and taken into custody. He refused to take the breathalyzer and the 47-year-old man was charged. He will appear in court on Nov. 18.

 A man and woman were warned by police after being seen taking scrap metal from an area near the CN tracks. The department is reminding people that it’s dangerous to be near the tracks.

Individuals taking scrap metal from near the tracks can be charged with theft and trespassing.

On Saturday night, a 43-year-old man was charged with public intoxication after being arrested on Victoria Street. He was held in cells until sober and issued a summary offence ticket upon his release.

Police responded to a fight at a downtown bar, but all the parties had dispersed by the time officers arrived.

On Sunday, officers received a call that a female was making harassing phone calls from her Dickey Street. The 37-year-old woman was warned by police about her behaviour and told to stop communicating with the 33-year-old victim.
