Ontario Man’s Inspiring Cross-Canada Bike Ride Makes Stop in Amherst

Nineteen-year-old Ontario man Trevor McLaughlin made an overnight stop at Locjh Lomond Campground Saturday. McLaughlin is dedicating his Cross-Canada Bike Ride to his maternal grandfather, a man who has been living with the degenerative central nervous system disease for the past decade. McLauglin plans on arriving in Halifax sometime on Monday before dipping the wheel of his black and neon green bicycle into the Atlantic Ocean at Peggy's Cover early Monday evening.

AMHERST-Trevor McLauglin is not your typical 19-year-old man.

About a decade ago, his maternal grandfather was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, the same degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that Canadian actor Michael J. Fox continues to battle.

“He doesn’t complain about it and doesn’t want anyone to feel sorry for him; he just continues going on with his life,” stated McLaughlin.

Earlier this year, McLauglin commenced a cross-Canada bike ride, aka Trevor’s Ride For Parkinson’s, to raise awareness and money for his Parkinson’s Disease. “I started this ride June 28 in Vancouver,” stated McLauglin Saturday night at Loch Lomond Campground where he received a free lot. “I had to stop on July 20 in Ottawa due to tendonitis in my left hip,” he added. “Thank you Loch Lomond for the free lot.”

Undaunted, McLaughlin resumed his journey September 2 in Riviere-Du-Loop, Quebec. Five days later, he reached Amherst, Nova Scotia.

“In June and July, I was averaging between 155 and 190 km per day on my bike” stated McLaughlin. “My plan is to reach Halifax on Monday,”

As McLaughlin did in Vancouver, he plans on dipping the tire of his black and neon green bicycle into the ocean once he reaches Peggy’s Cove, early Monday evening if everything goes according to plan.

“I think it’s fantastic that he’s taken this on,” stated McLaughlin’s paternal grandmother Jeannette McLaughlin. “We’re just so very proud that someone his age would take on something like that,” she added.
