Spider Jones will be speaking in Amherst next week.
AMHERST – Former gang member and motivational speaker Spider Jones is coming to Amherst on Sept. 18 for a public event at the Dominion Public Building.
Jones will sign the town’s guest book during the ceremony and meet and greet that runs from 6 to 8 p.m.
On Sept. 19, he will speak to students at Amherst Regional High School.
Jones was born into poverty in Windsor, Ont. with dreams of becoming a radio personality.
He dropped out of school in Grade 5 because of bullying and racism and spent years on the streets of Detroit on a dead-end course that landed him in jail.
He turned to boxing and won three Golden Gloves championships and later became a sports broadcaster.
He was inducted into the Canadian Boxing Hall of Fame in 1966 and now dedicates much of his spare time to speaking to children across North America recounting his own journey from gang life to broadcasting.
