Charity tournament raises money for health care

Cumberland Health Care Foundation past chairman David Wood addresses golfers at the start of the 18th Highland Classic on Friday.

AMHERST - Twenty-seven teams took to the fairways and greens at the Amherst Golf Club Friday afternoon in aid of the Cumberland Health Care Foundation.

The 18th Highland Classic is raising money for the foundation's general fund.

"This tournament is very important because it helps the foundation continue the work it has done and continues to do in Cumberland County," foundation past chairman David Wood told golfers on the practice green before heading onto the course.

The Highland Classic has raised $430,000 since its inception and raised just over $29,000 last year. The goal this year is $30,000.

The 18-hole event continues through the afternoon.
