AMHERST – Earlier this week The Needs store located on South Albion Street closed their door permanently.

The eastern Canadian convenience stores are owned by Sobeys Inc. and operated by independent franchisees.

The decision to close the store was made by Sobeys headquarters after assessing the business needs in the area.

“We had a number of locations in close proximity and determined that the remaining two would be sufficient to cover the needs our customers,” Shauna Selig, Manager of Communications and Corporate Affairs for Sobeys Inc. said.

Several employees were affected by the closure but Sobeys haven’t forgotten about their dedicated employees.

“We are assisting all employees in pursuing employment in the Amherst area within our Sobeys, Lawtons and Needs locations,” Selig said.

Bill and Ron have been reading my mail; the lack of leadership shown by the current mayor and council becomes more obvious every time another local business closes up. Businesses thrive when customers perceive the business community to be alive and vibrant. Because of the discord between council, the local chamber of commerce and the proponents of several downtown-based festivals, good ideas never see the light of day and those that do suffer from a lack of widespread support. The minister of municipal affairs should dissolve the current council on grounds of gross mismanagement and order new elections to be held. Any takers on my bet that none of the current crew would be returned to office?

This was a sobeys head office decision. it has nothing to do with the town and/ or the mayor or where town dollars get spent. The building has been for sale for quite some time with the intentions of closing once that happened anyways. It is a corporation that doesnt really care about anything but their bottom line. they figure they will pick up the slack at their other stores but honestly I think they are in for a surprise somewhat because peple are not going to go all the way out to the shell to go to a convenience store when Mikes is spitting distance from the closed needs location. And if they are willing to go that distance to the mall area they are likely to buy their stuff at walmart or a supermarket rather than the shell as it is cheaper than at a convenience store.

Time for Amherst to roll up the streets and put them away. Turn off the disco lights no one feels like dancing. Time for the leaders of Amherst to get their act together. 4 more years of these clowns and there will be no jobs in Amherst!!!!

Which one is going to be Mayor Small's legacy? Downtown disco park and colorful crosswalk with the new (old) town hall or the endless loss of businesses during his tenure?

There is one just down the road at the shell and another downtown. Not to worry. Sobey's said they would do this after the purchased the shell gas stations
