‘Racetrack Road’ gets its day

Foot traffic to and from the corner of South Albion and Industrial Drive is getting off the asphalt and onto the concrete. Amherst accepted a sidewalk tender from Costin Paving on Monday for the stretch, and another on Poplar Street.

AMHERST – Summer is in full swing but that doesn’t mean council can’t give up the surf and sand to role out some business.

Amherst Town Council called a special meeting today to approve the tender for two sidewalk constructions, with the lowest bidder being Costin Paving at $132,977. The money was pre-approved during council’s capital budget process.

The approved projects will see new sidewalks constructed on Industrial Park Drive, between South Albion and the Entry of South Gate Village on Rosewood Drive, and on Poplar Street, between South Albion and East Pleasant.

There was almost a third site selected but council opted to explore its options a little further.

“We were talking about Croft Street but we’re stepping back to make sure it’s the appropriate spot and going in the right spot, “ Amherst’s Chief Administrative Officer Greg Herrett said.

Nonetheless, Mayor Robert Small lauded the council meeting, saying it marks a long talked about accomplishment.

“I know council has been talking about ‘Racetrack Road’ for some time… it’s good to see this approved after three years,” Small said.

‘Racetrack Road’ is both a short side street off Industrial Drive that will benefit from the sidewalk, and a community nickname for the stretch of road that will see sidewalk construction because of a racetrack that used to be in the area.
