Fatal fall reported on board fishing vessel

CAPE SABLE ISLAND - A fisherman has died in an accident on board a vessel about 90 kilometres south of Cape Sable Island.

Mike Bonin, a spokesperson with the Halifax Rescue Coordination Centre, said a call was received around 4 p.m. Tuesday, July 23 that a fishermen had fallen from a boom and had suffered head injuries.

A helicopter, fixed wing aircraft and a Coast Guard cutter were heading to the scene to assist but Bonin said the man died from his injuries before help arrived.

At approximately 6:00 a.m. Wednesday, the fishing vessel arrived in East Pubnico and was met by Yarmouth RCMP members.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Paul Vernon "Brex" Malone, 55, from Lower East Pubnico, fell from the spar and died as a result of his injuries. He was a crewman on the sword fishing boat called "Savana & Jax."

The incident remains under investigation by the RCMP and the Nova Scotia Labour Board. RCMP believe the death is not suspicious.
