The RCMP released this photo of the tractor that rolled over in Conway, west of Tyne Valley, killing a 78-year-old Conway man. His name is not being released until all his family has been contacted.
Police, firefighters, paramedics and the coroner’s office were called to the scene of the fatal accident on the Oatway Road shortly after 5 p.m.
RCMP Sgt. Andrew Blackadar says the man was working in the backyard with his vintage tractor. He said it appears he was attempting to pull a stump out of the ground.
That’s when he hit the gas, causing the front of the tractor to lift up off the ground and overturn landing on top of the elderly man pinning him.
“This was just a terrible accident,” Blackadar said, in an interview.
Investigators were on the scene for more than three hours trying to piece together what unfolded. Police say alcohol was not involved.
The investigation is still ongoing and more information is expected to be released Thursday.
An autopsy is also scheduled for Thursday.
Blackadar said that will help police determine whether the man died from injuries he sustained in the accident or whether a medical condition may have been to blame.
Police say the name of the deceased will not be released until all of his family has been contacted.
