Y-Fit family fun day promotes physical activity for all ages

Ethan Rose pulls hard during the tug of war Saturday at Dickey Park during Y-Fit Family Fun Day. While Rose's team lost the tug of war,"all of us are winners today because we're all having fun," according to YMCA fitness coordinator Jennifer Rose.

AMHERST-There was something for everyone Saturday in Dickey Park, proof that you are never too young or too old to engage in some sort of physical activity.

“Today is about getting families together to promote the importance of physical activity,” said Stacy Coombs of the Amherst YMCA.

Jennifer Rose, the YMCA’s fitness co-ordinator, concurred with her colleague.

“There isn’t something going on every day in town, so we thought, why not use this great Dickey Park,” said Rose. “Because of the hot weather today, a lot of kids who just came out to use the splash pad are now aware of what is going on here.”

Similarly, those who were playing free pick-up ball hockey in the park put down their sticks when they observed what the Y-Fit family fun day was all about.

Eight runners ran a 200-metre portion of the park. Liam Pugsley finished first with a time of 54 seconds while Ethan Rose finished second with a time of 57 seconds. Taalan Rose finished third with a time of 1 minute and six seconds.

The long jump saw the trio tied for first place.

Another event was a modified discus throw. Children tossed five or 2.5-pound barbell plates as far as they could. Pugsley won the five-pound toss with a distance of 154 cm while Taalan Rose won the 2.5 pound toss with a distance of 145 cm.

Other events included hurdles and tug of war. Ethan Rose finished with a time of eight seconds. Pugsley, who won the 200-metre dash, finished second with a time of nine seconds while Taalan Rose finished in third place with a time of 10 seconds.

“All of us are winners today because we’re all having fun,” stated Rose who demonstrated several events. “You are also great listeners,” she told the children.

Weston’s Bakery barbecued hot dogs and hamburgers, which were free for kids.

Other highlights included a 5 K fun run/walk, Zumba and face painting. The 5K was won by Brittney Lewis. Alexa Coleman finished second while Lynn Canton finished third.

“The 5 K fun run/walk was fine, except for the heat,” stated Rose.
