Headlining act features two local bands

AMHERST - Back in the early 80s the Blueberry Harvest Festival used to be a big event in Amherst but for whatever reason, its popularity tapered off.

Mike LeBlanc and Adam Small, festival and events committee (a brand new committee) members felt the need to bring some of that excitement back to the community during the summer months.

“I’m tired of nothing going on,” LeBlanc said.

Everybody’s familiar with the name it was just a matter of taking the necessary steps to get the festival up and running again.

“We were handing out flyers and got the talk going, you could see people were excited to see the return of the Blueberry Harvest Festival. Everyone had great memories of it, LeBlanc said.

“It’s a revival. We’re brining it back,” Small said.

There will be activities for all ages during the August 16 to 18 festivities.

However, the beer gardens will be the headlining act.

“We’re expecting a sell out. It’s going to be the biggest event in town,” LeBlanc said.

On August 17 from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Amherst Stadium will host two local musical talents.

Hal Bruce from Halifax will open up the show followed by the Big Bad Marty Band from Moncton.

Throughout the summer months festivals and activities fill the community of Amherst but by the time late August hits, nothing seems to happen anymore.

“We were looking for something to take place during that timeframe. It just seemed like it fit. It worked before and we thought let’s role with it and see what happens,” Small said.

It also gives people an excuse to come back home, LeBlanc said.

“It’s kind of like a homecoming and we hope people will look forward to it every year.”

Having a foot in each door allowed Small (also an employee of Archway Insurance) to get the necessary funding for the entertainment. Archway Insurance in partnership with Intact Insurance will be major sponsors for the event.

“Archway Insurance is very community oriented. They’re involved quite often in community events throughout town. They were very enthusiastic about getting involved,” Small said.

Tickets and vendor applications can be purchased at Archway Insurance, McCully Market, Sharon’s Closet, Dayle’s, Buds To Blossoms, Home Hardware, YMCA and the Town of Amherst.

This is fantastic. You have to love it when people are doing something, and making things happen. Best of luck, I hope this is a huge success!
