Kelby Kaiser lays tiles.

AMHERST – Repairs on the decorative crosswalk on Church Street and Havlock Street started on Tuesday and will continue over the next week or two, weather depending.

The crosswalks were installed in September but the late season installation may have made it difficult for the thermoplastic tiles to bond to the asphalt and they ended up taking a beating from the changing temperatures and snowplow blades.

The work was covered under a warranty agreement between the contractor and the Town of Amherst.

The town awarded the contract last August to England Paving and Contracting Ltd. for $95,000 plus applicable taxes.

ONE OF THE THINGS THAT DRIVES ME CRAZY ABOUT CROSSWALKS IS THIS. WHY IS THE WALK LIGHT AND THE GREEN LIGHT FOR TRAFFIC TO MOVE ON AT THE SAME TIME??? THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL PEOPLE OVER THE YEARS THAT HAVE BEEN HIT BECAUSE OF THIS BOTH IN THIS TOWN AND OTHERS. I MYSELF HAVE ALMOST HIT PEOPLE THAT WANDERED OUT INTO THE CROSSWALK WHILE I WAS MAKING A TURN ON A GREEN LIGHT WHILE THE CROSSWALK LIGHT WAS ON. YOU LOOK AND NO ONE IS THERE AND THEN SUDDENLY SOMEONE DARTS OUT INTO THE CROSSWALK. DUH... SIMPLE SOLUTION MAKE ALL TRAFFIC LIGHTS STAY RED WHILE THE CROSSWALK LIGHTS ARE ON PERIOD. NO TRAFFIC MOVES WHILE THE WALK LIGHTS ARE ON. YES THIS MAY BE FRUSTRATING FOR ALL THE HURRIED DRIVERS WE SEEM TO HAVE THESE DAYS BUT SAFER FOR THE WALKERS ESPECIALLY THE SENIORS WHOM MAY NOT SEE OR HEAR THAT WELL ANYMORE OR HAVE TROUBLE TRAVERSING THIS CROSSWALK QUICKLY DUE TO OTHER HEALTH ISSUES THAT THEY MAY HAVE. THERE ARE BUTTONS TO PUSH THAT ACTIVATE THESE WALK LIGHTS AND ONCE THEY ARE ACTIVATED ALL TRAFFIC LIGHTS TURN RED PERIOD. I MAY HAVE TO WAIT AN EXTRA MINUTE OR 2 AT THE LIGHTS BUT EVERYONE CROSSING IN FRONT OF ME WOULD NOW BE SAFE TO WALK ACROSS THIS TRAFFIC GAUNTLET WE SEEM TO HAVE NOW IN AMHERST AND OTHER TOWNS AND CITIES.
