321 students to receive diplomas at seven county high schools

AMHERST – Lifelong memories will be made at seven Cumberland County high schools tonight as members of the Class of 2013 walk across the stage to begin the next phase of their lives.

More than 300 students will receive diplomas during graduation ceremonies that begin at 7 p.m. at six high schools and the Dr. Carson and Marion Murray Community Centre in Springhill.

In Amherst, 154 students will receive diplomas at the county’s largest high school.

Tens of thousands of dollars in prizes and awards will be presented along with several hundred thousand dollars in university and college entrance scholarships and bursaries.

As is tradition, the valedictorian for the Class of 2013 at Amherst Regional High School will be announced during the graduation rehearsal this morning. The valedictorian is the grad with the highest academic standing.

There are 41 grads at Parrsboro Regional High School, where Taylor Dinaut is the valedictorian. There is no guest speaker in Parrsboro.

The third largest grad class will be at Springhill High, where 36 students will receive diplomas.

Veteran police officer Kenny John Jackson will be the guest speaker at the ceremony at the community centre while Seamus Moore is the valedictorian.

In Oxford, the Class of 2013 at the Oxford Regional Education Centre includes 35 members with Mitchell Richard serving as the valedictorian.

Gail Shipp, who was the graduating class’s Primary teacher 12 years ago, will be the guest speaker.

Pugwash District High has 32 graduates. James Russell is the valedictorian and longtime lawyer Alden Blaikie is the guest speaker.

At River Hebert District High, 16 graduates will receive their diplomas. David Quinn is the valedictorian and Rev. Wayne MacArthur is the guest speaker. MacArthur graduated from the school in 1957 and went on to a successful career in the ministry.

Samantha Flueck is the valedictorian of the seven-member Class of 2013 at Advocate District High School.

Katherine Ogden, the sister of one of the grads, is the guest speaker.
