HALIFAX - Police say there was no risk to the public after a 57-year-old man walked down a Halifax street Sunday morning carrying a rifle.

The incident happened near Woodill and Maynard streets in Halifax, with police saying several people tried to get the gun away from the man around 10:30 a.m.

“The individuals that were involved in attempting to disarm this person were known to him,” said Halifax Regional Police Staff Sgt. Lindsay Hernden.

When police arrived, the group had entered a home in the 2400 block of Maynard Street.

The rifle was located, and police say a 57-year-old man from the Halifax area was arrested and charged with firearm-related offences.

No one was injured.

Hernden said police will not be releasing whether the rifle was loaded, or why the man decided to walk outside with a weapon.

“There’s no reason to believe that anybody was in any danger. I think this was a singular incident,” Hernden said. “There was no risk to the public.”

The man charged will appear in Halifax provincial court on Monday.
