L.A. Animal Shelter holds Expo in conjunction with Animal Awareness Month

AMHERST-Volunteers, pet owners and pet service providers congregated Saturday at the Amherst Lions Den to raise awareness about cats and dogs. “We’re doing very good today,” said Amherst Town councillor and L.A. Animal Shelter Board member Frank Balcom. “We’ve sold a lot of new memberships ($15.00 per person and $25.00 per family) and have a number of spayed, neutered, wormed and vaccinated cats available during our Adopt-a-Thon,” he added. The main benefits of becoming a member of the L.A. Animal Shelter include the right to vote at the AGM, receiving a newsletter and supporting the shelter. “We’re extremely pleased with the support we received from the town,” stated Balcom. One of these supporters is Jaya Pardy, 10-year-old Amherst youth who presented L.A. Animal Shelter president Marilynn Williams with a $200.00 donation. “I really like animals and I wanted to help,” explained Pardy. Instead of gifts, Pardy asked her friends if they could give her money for her birthday instead. “ It was all her idea,” stated Jaya Pardy’s mother Tammy Pardy. “We are both so very proud of her,” added Jaya Pardy’s father Larry Pardy. In addition to the representatives from the L.A. Shelter, a number of other vendors were on hand, including Emily’s Place, a spay and neuter outreach clinic serving Cumberland and Westmorland counties that has raised enough money to spay or neuter eleven cats; the Therapy Dog Program, a division of St. John Ambulance; ca-r-ma.org/Cat-Rescue-Maritimes; Greyhound Pets of Atlantic Canada (GPAC); Club Canine, an Athol-based boarding and day care centre for dogs specializing in high-quality products; Pet Valu, Rusty’s Dog Treats, and WAG Canine Recreation Centre operated by Jennifer Blackman that is situated on 10-C Lawrence Street. “I’ve been in business now for about 8 months,” stated Blackman. “Today is a good chance for me to connect with the public face-to-face, the most effective way to do business,” she said. “While I am fairly busy with my own business (animal daycare and grooming), I am glad to be here in support of the L.A. Animal Shelter,” she added in reference to the cost of renting a table at the Lions Den.
