Meeting tonight at 7
MACCAN - A meeting is set for 7 p.m. tonight at the Maccan Community Centre to breathe life back into the centre, which has struggled to stay open since the Maccan Legion (previously known as) folded over a year ago.
The meeting is open to the public in hopes of finding willing individuals who’ll take on the task of resurrecting the centre back to what it once was.
That’s the goal secretary-treasurer, Ruth Dwyer, wants to see realized.
“We haven’t had a president for a few months now and I’m stepping down as secretary-treasurer. We’re hoping to get people to fill the positions,” Dwyer said.
It’s another case of people having grand ideas but no one willing to put those ideas into action, Dwyer said.
“Everybody wants a hall, a building to go to, but nobody wants to do anything to work towards it and it’s going to take a lot of work.”
Since the demise of the legion it’s been a constant battle to keep the centre open.
“We were too late, everything was sold from the legion and now we’re starting from scratch,” she said. “It’s hard enough for organizations to even keep going today without starting it from scratch.”
Dwyer said it’s a helpless feeling watching a place the community could gather slowly fall apart.
“It’s frustrating because nobody wants to get involved.”
Still, Dwyer has hope that interested parties will participate in the meeting and find candidates who’ll turn back time, to a time when the centre was at its best.
