Owners, dogs and volunteers reunite for L.A. Animal Shelter’s 26th Anniversary Open House
UPPER NAPPAN-This past Saturday was a special day for those people and animals associated with the Lillian Allbon (L.A.) Animal Shelter over the years.
One of those animals present was Timbit, a former L.A. Animal Shelter dog that was fostered, and, later adopted, by dog lover Dennis Brown of Pugwash.
As its name suggests, Timbit was named after the popular bite-sized donut bit.
“Timbit was found wandering around Amherst by two girls who liked Timbits who fed the stray dog who also liked Timbits,” stated Brown. “The name stuck with it.”
Dogs wore red scarves to signify that they came from the L.A. Animal Shelter. Another past shelter dog whose story was related to those present was Sheba.
The event’s guest speaker was Shannon Benjamin, an 18 year-old ARHS student who has been volunteering at the L.A. Animal Shelter for the past six months.
“One day when I drove into town and saw a stray cat, I wished that I could have done more for it,” explained Benjamin. “While I soon realized there was little that I could have done for that cat, on the advice of mother I decided to volunteer at the L.A. Animal Shelter where I knew that I would be able to make a difference.”
Benjamin, a scholarship recipient, will be attending university in the fall. “Volunteering here at the shelter has brought me out my shell,” Benjamin said.
In addition to Benjamin’s speech, other highlights of the day, which included the raising of the flag during the outdoor portion of the event, saw long-time shelter friends Cora Berry, Phyllis Blumel, Donna Foster, Jean Henley and Catherine MacKay recognized with the presentation of lifetime memberships to the shelter.
L.A. Animal Shelter president Marilyn Williams invited those in attendance inside the shelter where refreshments, stories and time with shelter animals were enjoyed.
In conjunction with Animal Awareness Month (June), the L.A. Animal Shelter will be hosting an Animal Awareness Expo on Saturday, June 22 at the Lions’ Den.
