A meeting is planned for the River Hebert Fire Department at 7 p.m. on Thursday to talk about a rash of fires in the River Hebert-Joggins area.
WENTWORTH – Despite the Nova Scotia Education Minister’s request to the contrary, the Chignecto Central Regional School Board is moving forward with the closure of one of its rural school while pushing the expiry date of another to 2015.
Following its review of schools earlier this, Wentworth Consolidated Elementary was given until the end of the 2014 school year to find other funding options if it is to stay open. That date has now been pushed to 2015, but it comes with the announcement the school board will proceed with shutting Bass River Elementary at the end of this school year.
“The decision to close a school is never easy and in the case of Bass River and Wentworth Consolidated, this process has been very drawn out," said Trudy Thompson, Board Chair. "It is my hope that these decisions will allow these school communities – and our school board – to now prepare for the future.”
In April Education Minister Ramona Jennex had called on all school boards in the province to delay any proposed closures until a new review process could be developed.
Based on the Board’s decision, Bass River Elementary will close on June 30 of this year, with students moving up the road to West Colchester Consolidated for the start of the 2013-2014 school year.
