PARRSBORO – The Town of Parrsboro is moving to a system of curbside garbage collection, ending the previous practice of residents paying individual private collectors for the service.

The motion to seek proposals for the town-wide service on a contract basis was moved by deputy mayor Lisa Ward and seconded by Coun. Rob Fancy, approved at council’s April session.

“It appears the town can do it cheaper and more effective by contracting one person to do it for the entire town, so we’re looking for proposals to make that happen,” said CAO Ray Hickey.

The cost of the service would be paid for on residents’ tax bills, eliminating the process of paying the individual collector, Mayor Lois Smith explained.

“People will be paying for garbage collection, so it will be taken away and not piled up around their property or thrown in the woods,” she said. “We think this will be an improvement.”

Hickey said this week that the town had received proposals from two local collectors, and a decision was expected at the May council session.

It sounds like a good idea but how much more will it cost the taxpayer's per month? Will the garbage collector's actually go into someone's yard to get their garbage? If not what difference will it make for those to lazy to bag and put the garbage etc. at curbside? This I feel is the real problem.
