Century of service to youth recognized with special issue

OTTAWA - For 100 years, the volunteers fromBig Brothers Big Sisters of Canada have helped children across the country reach their potential by being positive role models and encouraging personal development. Canada Post today recognized that milestone by issuing a commemorative stamp honouring the achievements of the mentoring organization.

“The work of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada goes a long way to lend a helping hand and guidance where it’s needed most,” says the Honourable Steven Fletcher, Minister of State (Transport). “These volunteers change young lives every day and are beyond deserving of this recognition.”

The first Big Brothers agency was established in Canada in 1913 and the Big Sister program began around the same time and eventually merged into its present form. Research shows that girls with a Big Sister are four times less likely to bully, fight, lie or express anger than girls without a mentor. Little Brothers are twice as likely to believe that school is fun and doing well academically is important.

“The commitment to our children from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada is incredible,” says Deepak Chopra, President and CEO of Canada Post. “That spirit of community is always refreshing to see and this stamp recognizes the organization’s dedication to Canadian youth.”

The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada stamps measure 24mm x 32mm with simulated perforations. The Permanent™ domestic stamps are printed by Lowe-Martin on Tullis Russell paper using five-colour lithography. The stamps are pressure sensitive and the Official First Day Cover will feature a cancel from Toronto. Some 1.8 million stamps featuring the 100th anniversary of the organization have been produced and are sold in booklets of 10.
