Dalhousie University has 10 million reasons to smile today.

Local philanthropists Elizabeth and Fred Fountain have donated $10 million for a new School of Performing Arts at the south-end Halifax university.

The unveiling came during a ceremony Tuesday at the Dalhousie University Arts Centre. It’s the largest donation ever made by the couple.

“The arts play an important role in lending creativity and critical thinking to the more science-based disciplines. It’s our belief that the arts don’t get enough support and we want to change that,” said Fred Fountain in a statement.

This is the second million-dollar donation given by the Fountains in the past month. In April, the couple from Head of St. Margarets Bay donated $1.05 million for the QEⅡ Health Science Centre Foundation’s Stay Connected Mental Health Project.

A search for the new school’s director is now underway and Dalhousie says students can expect to see new activities starting in the fall.

“The gift is truly transformative and takes our excellence to the next level,” Dalhousie president Tom Traves said in a statement. “It allows us to expand the scope of the performing arts and to play an even stronger leadership role in our city and region.”

Try reading again. They donated a million to the QE2 and 10 million to Dalhousie. Confusing article, I know, what with all those words in the way.

You mention two differing amounts throughout the article. Is it a $10 Million donation or $1 Million? I little proof reading goes a long way....
