Highland Square Mall evacuated because of fire

Customers and employees wait outside the HIghland Square Mall where an electrical fire occurred this morning.

The Highland Square Mall in New Glasgow has been evacuated because of an electrical fire and one person was sent to hospital because of smoke inhalation.

Const. Ken MacDonald of the New Glasgow Regional Police Service said they received a call at approximately 8: 50 a.m. Police, EHS and the New Glasgow Fire Department responded.

MacDonald said the fire was at the rear of the building by WalMart

“The mall has been evacuated as safety precaution,” MacDonald said.

Nova Scotia Power is on scene.

The mall will remain closed until Nova Scotia Power and the New Glasgow Fire Department deem it is safe.
