COXHEATH, N.S. — A crisis intervention team has been sent to the Cape Breton high school where Emma van Nostrand was a student, a day after the 18-year-old died while competing in her first marathon.

Van Nostrand was an honour student in Grade 12 at Riverview High School in Coxheath, N.S.

The young woman, in Toronto on Sunday to take part in her first full marathon, was within three kilometres of the finish line when she collapsed.

Chris Milburn, an emergency room doctor who knew van Nostrand through her Cape Breton running club, says it’s still unclear what happened.

However, Milburn says it’s important for people to remember that this kind of tragedy is extremely rare.

Milburn, president of the Cape Breton Road Runners, says the risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle are higher than those associated with an active one.
