Volunteers took the centre stage Thursday night during Springhill’s Volunteer Recognition Night, where (from left) Mayor Max Snow congratulated and thanked (from left) the community centre’s volunteer canteen staff members Tim Smith, Maddi Mitchell, Blake Nicholson and Tevin Somers (missing: Cathy Coon, Cathy Crowe, Michelle Herrett, Reghan Smith, Starr Smith and Steve Varner).

SPRINGHILL – Volunteers play a major role in small communities and the Town of Springhill wasn’t going to let those efforts go unnoticed without some recognition.

For over 20 years, the town has held a special night dedicated to the people who make up the various groups and organizations, applauding their dedication and thanking them for adding to the community’s character.

“We come together to recognize a special group of people, a group who don’t seek out recognition,” Mayor Max Snow said at Thursday’s Volunteer Recognition Night at the Dr. Carson and Marion Murray Community Centre. “The Town of Springhill wants you to know we appreciate you… you, the volunteers, are the backbone of our community and without you if would be difficult.”

Volunteers, Snow said, make the community a better place while working quietly on projects big and small, and often behind the scenes.

“Many of you have been giving your time – weeks in, weeks out – for the good of the community,” Doug Marshall, Riding Association president for the Cumberland South Progressive Conservatives, said on behalf of MLA Jamie Baillie. “You don’t do it for monetary gain or recognition. You do it for the community. Tonight is you night.”

Each year local groups and organizations are asked to nominate a member to receive recognition and share the stage with the town’s volunteer of the year, youth volunteer of the year and group of the year.
