Firefighters from the North Shore fire department battle a blaze at the Stanhope Beach Resort Tuesday, April 23.
Historic Stanhope Beach Lodge was engulfed by a raging fire late Tuesday afternoon.
Flames have consumed much of the rear section of the main lodge, sending staff inside scrambling for safety.
Staff were busy trying to save furniture, paintings and whatever else they could carry out before flames forced them outside. The resort reports all staff are safe.
Stanhope Beach Resort staff told a Guardian photographer they were inside cleaning when flames suddenly erupted just before 4 p.m.
It appears much of the main resort is lost and the roof has collapsed in the rear. The centre roof is about to collapse as well.
Firefighters are battling to save adjacent cottages and other buildings but some cabins are also now on fire.
North Shore fire department was first on the scene. Mutual aid was called and Charlottetown firefighters arrived on the scene with trucks just before 4:45 p.m.
Strong westerly winds is making it difficult for firefighters to put out the flames.
The resort was being prepared for the opening of the new tourist season and was scheduled to open before Mother's Day on May 12.
