11 schools taken off the list
The Chignecto-Central Regional School Board has ended the closure review process for 11 schools including two in Springhill.
TRURO – The Chignecto-Central Regional School Board is ending the review process for 11 schools across the district, including two in Springhill.
The school review process was started for the 11 schools as part of the annual capital construction process that has historically placed greater weight on those submissions for new construction or renovation that could show that schools which would be affected by the construction were already under review.
“The board made the decision to end the school review process for these 11 schools in accordance with the minister’s request,” board chairwoman Trudy Thompson said in a news release on Thursday. “The minister has assured us that ending the process for these schools will not compromise our 2013-14 capital construction process. Ultimately, that was what board members needed to know to feel comfortable with last night’s decision.”
Among the 11 schools on the list was both Junction Road Elementary and West End-Memorial Elementary in Springhill. The board plans to submit a request to the province to replace both schools with a new elementary in the community.
The school review process is continuing for Highland Consolidated Middle School and East Pictou Middle School.
The board also brought forward a notice of motion on the minister’s request to delay the planned closures of any schools until after 2014. The notice of motion means board members will vote on whether or not to delay the closure of Bass River Elementary, slated for closure on June 30, and Wentworth Consolidated, slated for closure on June 30, 2014, at the next regular board meeting on May 15.
