The application deadline for the CHA health careers bursary has been set for May 24.
AMHERST – Cumberland County students looking for financial assistance in pursuing a career in health care have until May 24 to apply for a 2013 bursary from the Cumberland Health Care Careers Bursary Program.
A joint undertaking of the Cumberland Health Authority and its five partner health care foundations, the bursary program has proven to be a very successful way to bring local young people back to their home communities to live and work.
CEO Bruce Quigley said the CHA is delighted with the results to date.
“This year we will be awarding the tenth group of bursaries as part of this innovative program,” said Quigley. “Once this year’s graduates join the staff, we will have a total of twenty-seven employees who have participated in the program. All of this is thanks to the vision and support of our foundation partners.”
The bursary program was designed to assist the CHA in addressing anticipated human resource shortages in various health care professions in the upcoming years. Under the terms and conditions of the program, which is only open to Cumberland County students, preference is given to those enrolled in programs of study where there is a projected staffing need at the time of their graduation.
Successful applicants receive a bursary of up to $5,000 per year to support their studies. Student participation includes signing a contract with the health authority for a return for service upon graduation equal to the number of years for which they receive a bursary. This means that if a student receives a bursary for four years of study then they will be expected to work for the health authority for four years following graduation at a location chosen by the health authority. In addition to being guaranteed a job upon graduation, students are also given the opportunity for summer employment with the health authority.
Quigley noted that the CHA has staffing challenges throughout the district and that recipients of this bursary continue to play a very important role in filling these positions.
“The CHA operates facilities in Advocate Harbor, Pugwash, Parrsboro, Springhill and Amherst and this program has proven to be a good way for us to address staffing shortages in each of these communities,” he said.

Information has also been distributed to Cumberland County high school guidance departments. Applications are not limited to high school students and those already in post-secondary health-care related studies are welcome to apply.
