MONTAGUE — Texting was a contributing factor in an accident early Saturday morning near Montague.

Montague RCMP, Island EMS and Montague volunteer fire department responded to a single-vehicle roll over early Saturday morning on Highway 4 in front of the Buffalo Ranch.

Five teenage men were in a vehicle that had just left a house party in the area. The driver, an 18-year-old Vernon River resident, told police he became distracted while texting, left the road, struck a culvert and the vehicle rolled several times.  All occupants received minor injuries. None required hospitalization.

The police investigation also determined that alcohol was a factor in the crash, but the driver’s blood-alcohol level was not sufficient enough to warrant a criminal charge.

The driver will be facing numerous Highway Traffic Act charges as a result of the investigation, including driving without due care and attention, and a license suspension due to the strict rules in P.E.I. for drivers still in the Graduated License program relating to zero tolerance for any blood alcohol level.

The investigation determined that weather and road conditions, as well as speed, did not play a role in the crash.

It sounds somehwat strange that the driver was only 18 , yet they "didn't have enough alcohol in their blood" to charge them. Just a minute, is there not something wrong with that statement? The person is under 19 and the last time I checked, they are still under the legal age to drink so any alcohol should be sufficient to charge them. They could have caused the deaths of the other people in the vehicle let alone another innocent person had they been on the road in the same place at that time. I feel that this youth is getting off extremely serious charges that they should be charged with. DUI is an extremely serious charge.
