About 200 gymnasts will compete at invitational

AMHERST – The gymnastic floor was moved last night and the rest of the equipment will be moved tonight as the Aerials Gymnastics Club prepares for their March Break Invitational Saturday and Sunday at Amherst Regional High School.

“It’s usually two or three big truckloads to move everything,” said Aerials coach, Michelle Landry. “The floor itself is two layers of boards, and one of the layers has springs on them, so it is a lot of work.

“But the girls are always excited to compete at home on their own equipment, so the move is worth it,” added Landry.

About 200 gymnasts will arrive in Amherst from PEI and from throughout Nova Scotia to take part in the invitational.

The competition runs Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and then starts off again Sunday at 8:30 a.m. Sunday afternoon is the Recreational Fun meet.

“A large part of out club is not the competitive gymnasts, and we want everyone to have a chance, so any gymnast six-years-old or over can compete in the recreational side of it on Sunday afternoon,” said Landry. “We also have the intermediate competition, which is for pre-competitive gymnasts.”

The club is looking for volunteers to help with the meet.

“We are moving equipment after 5 p.m. on Friday,” said Landry. “And we need help with canteen and at the door on Saturday and Sunday.”

The cost of admission to the invitaional is $3, and is free for children under 10-years-old.

For more information or anybody interested in volunteering can contact Landry at aerialsgymclub@gmail.com.
