HALIFAX – The 85th Oscar presentations on Sunday reminded the world why Nova Scotia is a great place to learn.

John Kahrs, who graduated from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1990, won the 2013 Best Animated Short Film Oscar for his production, Paperman.

"The province is very proud of NSCAD, its staff, faculty, students and alumni, and that is why we are helping NSCAD to be there to teach future generations of leaders in the arts community," said Minister of Labour and Advanced Education Marilyn More in a news release. "Mr. Kahrs is an excellent example of what NSCAD graduates can achieve, and I congratulate him on this tremendous recognition."

Kahrs is a key Disney Pixar animator, who worked on several well-known features including Ratatouille, The Incredibles, Monsters, Inc. and Toy Story 2.

"NSCAD graduates have put Nova Scotia on the world map on several levels, from singer/songwriter Sarah MacLachlan to filmmaker Andrea Dorfman, just to name a few," said Minister of Communities, Culture and Heritage Leonard Preyra. "Our support for NSCAD is just one element of our support for the arts in this province."

Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2012 and serves about 1,000 full- and part-time students a year.
