AMHERST – Amherst Police are urging users of a medical monitoring system that the company has gone out of business.

The company is JTF Alarms of Halifax and police say they are concerned seniors who purchased a medical monitoring package from the company may not be aware the units are no longer operational.

Const. Tom Wood said police received a complaint of an elderly individual pressing a medical emergency button only to discover the device failed to respond. The senior was able to get to a phone and call for emergency services.

Police are advising residents to call their monitoring companies to test their units to verify that they are operational.

Wood said it appears as though seniors may still be paying monthly charges even though the company is no longer providing the service.

Police are continuing to investigate.
