AMHERST - Snow and blowing snow has shut down the Amherst area as a blizzard moves through the area.

Heavy snow and northeast winds gusting to 80 km/h made traveling treacherous and cancelled most events in the area on Saturday.

Most businesses remained closed for the day and those that did open decided to close their doors.

The Amherst Ramblers hockey game against the Weeks Crushers was cancelled as was all minor hockey activities.

The storm also forced the cancellation of the town's 24-hour physical activity day. It will be rescheduled for later in the month.

Another 10 cm of snow is forecast to fall overnight and into Sunday morning. Another two to four cm of snow is expected on Sunday with winds gunsting out of the north to 70 km/h in the morning, before diminishing to 30 km/h gusting to 50 later in the day.

Skies are expected to clear later Sunday with a mix of sun and cloud on Monday and rain on Tuesday.

Thats my home town Amherst and I still remember all the big snow storms when I was young. There is something about living in a small town that when you get a snow storm it really brings us all together lots of memories!!! Just wish everyone to stay warm and be safe! God Bless ya lol
