AMHERST – A massive winter storm bearing down on the region has forced the cancellation of several events in Cumberland County this weekend.

Environment Canada is maintaining a blizzard warning for the area with heavy snow and strong winds beginning later tonight and continuing through Saturday.

Up to 10 cm of snow is expected overnight tonight, with the possibility of another 20 cm on Saturday and an additional 10 cm on Saturday night. Flurries are forecast for Sunday.

Winds, gusting to between 80 and 100 km/h, will bring blowing snow.

All Cumberland County Minor Hockey Association games and practices in Springhill and Oxford on Saturday have been cancelled, while the Tim Horton's Timbits session in Amherst is also cancelled.

The Amherst Fire Department's Friday bingo is cancelled for tonight as is the music jam at the Capitol Theatre in Oxford.

The Truro Major Bantam Bearcats' games on the weekend are also cancelled, including Sunday's game in Springhill.

The 24-Hour Physical Activity Day, scheduled for Amherst on Saturday, has been postponed because of the expected snow.  The day will be rescheduled for later in February.

As well, the supper and silent auction at Trinity-St. Stephen's United Church on Saturday night has been rescheduled for Feb. 16 at 5 p.m. with one sitting. Tickets are available at the church office or by calling 667-8483.

The Knights of Columbus is cancelling its pancake breakfast on Saturday, while the Bantam AA and Peewee AA breakfast scheduled for Saturday at the Lions Club has been rescheduled to Feb. 16 from 8 to 11 a.m.

Cancellations can be emailed to dcole@amherstdaily.com and we'll continue updating this website throughout the day.
